Nurse Amy Hinchy from Limerick explains why she is supporting the 2020 Colour Dash Family 5k on Sunday 5th July in honour of her late aunt.
Losing her aunt to cancer in 2016 came as a huge blow to nurse Amy Hinchy from Limerick.
“She had come through a number of battles with cancer and was so young when she died. I was really close to her; it really had a huge impact on me,” Amy said of her aunt Kathleen Hinchy, who she described as a “truly lovely person” who adored animals and helping them by volunteering with Limerick Animal Welfare.
At the time of her aunt’s passing in 2017 Amy was a university nursing student.
The care and compassion she saw her aunt receive motivated Amy to seek out a career in cancer nursing, and she wanted to give back even more by fundraising for cancer charities.
Since then she has raised money for the care centre in Milford where her aunt spent her final weeks, has donated seven inches of her hair to the Little Princess Fund and ran the Irish Cancer Society Colour Dash in 2017 in memory of her aunt who had passed away the previous month.
“I decided to put my energy into something meaningful. I had started an online fundraising profile and raised a large amount of money from the support of family and friends,” said Amy.
“In all, I've been really trying to really help as much as I can for the organisations that mean a lot for me. The Irish Cancer Society is really important to me and I'm always trying to find ways to help raise awareness and support for them.
“Last year myself and my boyfriend decided to run the Colour Dash in Limerick at home and set up another fundraiser in memory of my aunt. We successfully raised money from the support of our friends and family. We completed the run together and had a great day out at it.
Sadly, Amy won’t be able to take part in the traditional Colour Dash event in Limerick this year which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to concern for public safety over Covid-19.
Despite this she is looking forward to supporting the Irish Cancer Society’s 2020 Colour Dash Family 5k this July announced in replacement of the traditional Colour Dash.
