Commenting on the HSE Safe Return to Health Services Plan published today, Irish Cancer Society Director of Advocacy Rachel Morrogh said:

“We are very concerned by the HSE’s Safe Return to Health Services Plan, that indicates that in a best case scenario it won’t be until the end of the year before cancer services return to pre-Covid-19 levels.

"Before Covid-19, capacity across the cancer system was insufficient and this led to waiting lists that acted as barriers to timely care. The Irish Cancer Society does not want to return to these ‘normal’ levels. It is essential that capacity is expanded, that more healthcare workers are recruited and retained and that cancer services no longer have to compete for the same resources required for unscheduled care.

"We are particularly concerned that delays for radiology, endoscopy and surgical services, as well as other vital cancer services, will continue for a considerable period of time. Delays in diagnosis and treatment can mean fewer options for patients and reduced survival rates.

"This news will worry cancer patients who have already faced huge additional challenges over the past 12 months. It underscores the need for Irish Cancer Society services, such as counselling, information and support, all of which are funded by Daffodil Day donations. Daffodil Day takes place this Friday and the Irish Cancer Society is appealing to the public to give what they can so we can support people in need.”
