Call for nominations: Irish Cancer Society 2017 Research Awards

Research funded by the Irish Cancer Society continues drive important improvements in the Irish cancer research landscape. Our work now encompasses that of individual researchers from PhD students to Principle Investigators, and with our support of larger Collaborative Cancer Research Centres, we are driving a national, multi-disciplinary approach to find new and innovative ways to improve cancer outcome.

To acknowledge and celebrate the work of our researchers, in the lab, clinic and elsewhere, we will be hosting the Irish Cancer Society Research Awards 2017.

This year, there are three categories:

  1. PhD student.
  2. Post-Doctoral fellow.
  3. Research Support Staff.

Eligibility criteria

For Categories 1 & 2 above, all PhD students and Post-Doctoral fellows (individual or collaborative awards) who are wholly or partly funded by the Irish Cancer Society are eligible to apply. Applications are welcome from those currently funded or with contracts that ended in 2017.*

For Category 3, nominees are not required to be part or wholly funded by the Irish Cancer Society but support the work of those who are. The description ‘Support Staff’ refers to research assistants, lab managers, administrative staff (including project/program managers, research managers/coordinators) and any researchers in your lab, at any level, who offer supervision, mentorship and support. Here we are looking for someone who on a daily basis goes above and beyond the call of duty to support the research being carried out.

Submissions

For Category 1 & 2: Send a personal statement (500 words max) outlining why you should be considered for this award. This should provide proof of research excellence commensurate to your experience along with details of outreach work you have undertaken. This should be written in lay terms, and use non-technical language.

Your application should be accompanied by a strong letter of support from your supervisor or mentor.

For Category 3: Nominations only. You CANNOT nominate yourself. Nomination should consist of a letter of support from one or more Irish Cancer Society-funded researchers (as defined in the criteria above) explaining why the nominee should be considered for this award. The nominator must have sought the consent of the nominee in advance of the submission. There is no limit to the number of people who can sign this letter. However, one person must be highlighted as the contact point for the nomination.

Please email nominations to research@irishcancer.ie with the subject line “2017 Research Awards Nomination”.

Deadline for application is Friday, 13 October. Applications will be reviewed by research and health care professionals as well as patient and public representatives.

Those shortlisted for Categories 1 & 2 will be invited to present their work at the final in Dublin on 30 November. At this event, one PhD and one Post doc nominee will be chosen by an independent panel.

The winner of the Category 3 nomination will be announced on the night of the awards.
