At the Irish Cancer Society, we have a vision that by 2025, 3 out of 4 Irish cancer patients will survive their diagnosis and everyone affected by the disease will have access to world class treatment, care and support.

A key priority for achieving our vision is to increase our investment in world class cancer research. Every year, we fund patient-focused cancer research from translational and clinical projects in areas such as early detection, novel cancer treatments and clinical trials, right through to research focussed on cancer prevention, improvements in care, wellbeing and outcomes of those living with, through and beyond a cancer diagnosis, in addition to research to support those at end of life.


What you’ll do

Over the next five years, the Society want to increase cancer research capacity amongst the social, nursing, and allied health community in Ireland. This will help us ensure that research centred on improving the care and quality of life of all those in Ireland affected by cancer is at the top of the cancer research agenda.

In line with this, your role will be to coordinate and implement our social science, nursing, and allied health cancer research programmes. You will work closely with all members of the cancer research department in the Irish Cancer Society as well as with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement policies, strategies, and plans for enhancing cancer research capability amongst this community.

Research Programmes:

  • Develop and implement the Society’s research funding calls aimed at the social science, nursing, and allied health research community.
  • Support all activities relating to on-going grant management and work with currently funded researchers and research support staff on a day-to-day basis.
  • Develop strategies to continuously improve the quality of grant management and monitoring and ensure best-practice in award governance processes and procedures
  • Contribute to the development of new strategic research projects aimed at building capacity amongst the social science, nursing, and allied health community.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with funded researchers, key members of the social, nursing and allied health community and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Interact with other funding agencies on joint funding arrangements and partnerships.
  • Partner with other departments within the Irish Cancer Society to develop internal cancer research priorities.
  • Work with the Irish Cancer Society Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) panel, to ensure the patient voice is embedded into our research processes.


  • Work with the Irish Cancer Society communications team to provide external communication of the Society’s research programmes and calls.
  • Work alongside the research team to coordinate research talks, workshops, training opportunities, and outreach events.
  • Implement the Society’s impact monitoring framework for our Social, nursing and allied health awardees.
  • Assist the research team in responding to research related queries from the public.
  • Represent the Research Department at internal and external meetings and inform the Research Team and others in the Society as required of the outcomes and actions arising from these meetings.

Who you are

  • Passionate about health services research
  • Have excellent stakeholder management and people skills, and an ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
  • High level of organisational ability, accuracy and attention to detail. You will be able to make decisions using good judgement and reasoning.
  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to ability to draft and edit reports.
  • Will have a flexible approach with the ability to work in a methodical and organized fashion.

Your qualifications and experience

  • A PhD (or within 3 months of completion) or equivalent* in a relevant discipline (for example psychology, nursing, allied health, public health, applied social research)
  • Good knowledge of the health research environment in Ireland including funding procedures, clinical/HSE infrastructures, and university processes.
  • Experience of working on research projects involving direct participant/patient contact is required. e.g. patient intervention studies etc.
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team within the health service would be beneficial
  • Experience within the cancer research/service provision landscape is desirable

*PhD equivalence is defined as three or more senior (first, joint-first, or last) author publications in peer-reviewed academic journals or 4 years’ full-time research experience post-primary degree
