Workplace Policies, Programmes and Training Workshops

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Irish Cancer Society’s Smoking Cessation Services. I hope this information is of interest to you.

We provide a range of literature, information sessions and health promotion services to the public on health and cancer related issues. These can be delivered in key settings such as communities, workplaces, hospitals and schools. One of our Health Promotion nurses or another member of the health promotion team delivers all of the services listed.

Smoking Cessation Session
This session can vary in length from 45mins to one hour depending on the time available.
The topics include:

  • The current situation in Ireland
  • Different methods of quitting
  • Advice on addiction
  • Health effects of smoking
  • The benefits of quitting
  • The services offered

This session is delivered in an interactive way and visual aids are used which can include slides and/or a short video.

Smoking Cessation Information Days
These days provide an opportunity to raise awareness about smoking and the health risks. Our information stand is manned by one of our Health Promotion Nurses who are available to provide information leaflets and offer advice on quitting smoking. In addition to this service we can also offer carbon monoxide monitoring for smokers.

Smoking Cessation One-to-One Advice
We provide a one-to-one Smoking Cessation Counselling Service. This provides an opportunity for smokers to meet for an allotted time with our nurse on a one-to-one basis to discuss their individual smoking addiction and get support and advice in quitting including Carbon Monoxide testing.

Smoking Cessation Course:
Participants are invited to attend a one-hour session for six weeks. A trained Smoking Cessation counsellor facilitates the group. The facilitator assists participants in planning and preparing to quit and provides the setting, information and research based recommendations on how participants are more likely to succeed. Group members provide support for one another during the quitting process. Each participant receives the entire Irish Cancer Society stop smoking literature including ‘Advice Kit’, ‘Just be Smoke Free’, and the ‘Beauty of Quitting’.
This course can be organised on site and can cater for up to 15 people.

During the six-week course the following topics are covered:
