Continuous Nausea

Last reply: 23 July 2020 12:27

Hello.
My Dad has just completed his second round of chemo(folfox). He experienced continuous nausea with vomiting after his first treatment. He ended up in hospital and was put on a pump to administer anti-nausea meds.
He had his 2nd treatment on Thursday (they adapted his infusion in the hope he wouldn't be as sick) and while he is nowhere near as bad as he was the last time he still is feeling continously nauseous. He was vomiting on Friday but that has stopped now.
I suppose I'm just looking for advice on any tips any of you might have on how to combat nausea. He's tried Valoid, Maxolon and Zofron but they don't seem to do anything to alleviate the symptoms.
Thanks.

Hi Catriona,

Im very sorry to read about your dad’s cancer diagnosis and that he has been unwell after his treatment.  It must have been a very difficult and distressing time for you all.

Nausea is an awful side effect from treatment and it can have a huge impact on a person.  It is good that the team adapted his treatment after his first chemotherapy.  It may be helpful to contact his consultant or one of the team to let them know his nausea is still ongoing, there may be other medication other than the ones you have mentioned that may help.  Some recommendations to help nausea from our website are:

•           Eat small amounts of food regularly rather than 3 big meals.

•           Try bland, easy-to-digest foods and drinks, like cream crackers, toast or plain biscuits.

•           Avoid foods that make you feel sick. For example, fatty foods, foods with a strong smell, like garlic, onions, fried foods, etc.

•           Eat warm or cool foods if you cannot tolerate the smell of hot food.

•           Take ginger or peppermint to ease the nausea.

•           Take plenty of fluids in small amounts throughout the day.

•           Try a complementary therapy, like acupuncture. It may help nausea

Please call us on 1800 200 700 if you would like to speak with a cancer nurse about your Dads situation in more detail or to speak about any of the recommendations above.

Kind regards,

Cancer nurse.
