Get Tee’d up for the Irish Cancer Society with a Golf Fundraiser this Summer!

This summer why don't you hit the fairways, have some fun and raise valuable funds for the Irish Cancer Society’s patient care services? You can swing into action to help us help people all over the country touched by cancer by organising one of the following events.

1. Run a Golf Tournament (Golf Classic Am-Am or Scramble)

These are the most popular methods of golf fundraising.  In planning to run a tournament there are two really critical things to do to make it a success:

  • Recruit a tournament organising committee that has loads of golfing contacts.  You need people to help you that know lots of golfers who can enter teams or sponsor a tee / green and aren't afraid to ask them to do so.
  • Discuss with the club where you are considering holding your fundraiser. They will know the nuts and bolts of organising a tournament in their club.

Methods to generate funds at a Golf Classic include charging each team an entry fee and getting each tee and /or green sponsored.

2. Organise a Golf Skills Competitions

You can run skills event fundraiser in golf clubs as part of a open day, club competition or at other occasions during the club's year including Men's and Ladies' Captainss Day and President's Day.

These competitions can be held within a standard format tournament or as a stand-alone event with sponsorships and entry fees.

Possible competitions include:

  • Longest Drive Competition - For an entry fee golfers hit as far as they can on one hole in their round (usually a long par 5).
  • Nearest the Pin shot - For an entry fee, players are marked as to how close to the pin they land their first shot. Best shot of the day wins a prize.
  • Chipping Contests - Best chip onto the green, works like the longest drive.
  • Bunker Contests - Best wedge shot out of a bunker onto the green. Works the same as the chipping contest and longest drive.

3.   Other ways to raise funds in your golf club

  • Silent auction: Get items sponsored from the pro shop or local businesses.  On the day of your golf fundraiser, setup a couple of tables full of these donated goods and services. Tape bidding sheets and descriptions of each item to the tables so that golfers can place their bids on the sheet.  Make sure to get the bidding started on each item and encourage everyone to bid.
  • Raffle: You can sell raffle tickets for quality prizes in conjunction with your event. To increase sales, sell tickets to the general public and not just to your group of supporters. You can even set up a sales table at high-traffic such as shopping centres.  Draw the winners out in the club.
  • Collection: Leave some ICS merchandise (golfing merchandise, ribbons etc) in the changing rooms, bar, pro-shop etc.  Ask people to make a contribution, or make a set amount donation, for the merchandise.

Please contact the Irish Cancer Society’s Fundraising Team on 1850 60 60 60 or fundraising@irishcancer.ie to discuss and register your event and get support from our fundraising team.
