5 Day Cancer Care Programme for Non Specialist Nurses 2008/2009

COURSE

This course is being run in the local Centres of Nurse Education (HSE) throughout Ireland in
co-operation with the Irish Cancer Society.

AIM

The aim of this five-day programme is to provide registered nurses, who are working with people with cancer with an overview of cancer as a disease process, current treatment modalities and the psychosocial impact of a diagnosis of cancer.  This will enable them to provide quality holistic care for patients with cancer in non-specialist settings.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this programme, participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • The cancer disease process
  • Cancer treatment modalities
  • The nursing assessment and management of patients/clients with symptomatic cancer disease and its subsequent treatment
  • The principles of palliative care and pain control
  • Symptom control to the individual care of patients/clients in the palliative setting
  • The psychosocial issues involved in the diagnosis of cancer and approaches to the psychosocial support of patients/clients with cancer and their significant others
  • How to access further information and resources on cancer as a disease process and its prevention and treatment for both patients/clients and professionals involved in their care

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Since cancer patients are cared for in general hospitals and community care areas, as well as specialist cancer centres this continuing education programme has an important function in achieving better care for cancer patients through the education of Registered General Nurses, Clinical Nurse Managers and Public Health Nurses working in the Community. The programme may be difficult for any one who has a relative or friend with cancer or a recent bereavement and they may wish to consider this prior to attending the programme.
