Tamoxifen hasnt worked

Last reply: 10 December 2016 09:01

I am wondering if anyone of my age (40) has the experience of a 2nd breast cancer diagnosis within 4 years, in spite of being on Tamoxifen (for the last 3 yrs)?

Hi there, I am sorry to hear that you have yet again been diagnosed with Breast cancer when it is the one thing that we fear the most. I was diagnosed in April 2013 and have been taking the dreaded Tamoxifen since July 2013. I have always thought that although it has turned me into a 'zombie, and I feel years older than I am that at least it was protecting me... What have the medical team told you regarding why/how the tamoxifen didn't work? I wish you well with your new treatment.. Do keep us posted x

Hi Resolute,
The oncologist is puzzled as to why the Tamoxifen has not worked. Its unusual for is not to, and i don't think he has any other patients of my age for whom it hasnt worked, so its by no means a probable outcome for BC patients. As to what happens next, that is not yet decided. Im currently having radiotherapy. Thanks for the well wishes.

Hi Resolute,
Just reading your reply, I was wondering about what you said about Tamoxifen. I just started taking it the other day and haven't noticed anything so far. What do you mean about feeling like a zombie? Does it make you tired or give you brain fuzz? I hope against all hopes that it will protect us all.

Hi there luciebutterfly (love the name)! Hope you are doing well now! Regarding the Tamoxifen.. I started taking it in July 13 and despite all the bad press it gets, I was determined that I would keep an open mind and see how it goes .. so .. of course I still take it every night as if my life depended on it (and maybe it does?) but I do feel I have aged massively in the past 3 years.. yes I have foggy brain sometimes, muscle soreness and weight gain but are these side effects of Tamoxifen or just reflective of my age.. I'm not sure but hate feeling that I've aged 10 years in 3! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Anne
