Care to Drive

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If I sign up to the CARE TO DRIVE scheme, will I be covered by my current insurance policy?
Yes, your Class 1 Social Domestic and Pleasure Insurance will cover this.  The organisers of the CARE TO DRIVE scheme have a letter of confirmation and they will ask you to have this stamped by your insurer for their files.

Will I be expected to travel excessive distances to collect patients?
No, the organisers of the CARE TO DRIVE scheme will coordinate the programme in such a way that drivers will be collecting patients from their own community wherever possible.

Does the Irish Cancer Society pay for petrol?
Yes, the Society will make a contribution towards your petrol costs.

Will you pay for parking?
You should not need to park your car at the hospital.  However, if necessary, we have arranged free short term parking for the project.

Will my schedule be accommodated?
Yes – the CARE TO DRIVE scheme organisers will endeavour to prepare rosters on a monthly basis and will take your preferences into account.

How will the roster work?
The Care to Drive staff will create a monthly roster based on each volunteer’s availability and the locations required for pick ups.  This will be updated on a weekly basis and the staff will be in close contact with the drivers in order to provide as smooth a service as possible.

Will there be other expectations on the drivers
There will be a quarterly meeting for all drivers to attend.  This will be an opportunity to meet fellow volunteers discuss your work.  Also, these meetings will provide The Irish Cancer Society with valuable feedback around how the programme is working and what improvements we can make for the future.

Are there volunteer positions that don’t require driving?
We are actively seeking volunteers who are willing to answer the telephone after office hours and on weekends in the event that a volunteer has to cancel at the last minute.
We are also looking for people with rostering and/or dispatch experience to participate on a working group whose aim will be to create the best possible system for our service.

Does it made whether I have (or haven’t) had cancer myself?
Everyone is welcome to participate in this programme regardless of your personal experience of cancer. We would caution you, however, that you might find the experience an emotionally challenging one, particularly if you have had a recent loss.
