Breast cancer in younger pre-menopausal woman is not common and most cases occur in
women over the age of 50 years of age. For example the risk for a woman between the
ages of 30-34 years is 1 in 900, compared with the risk of a woman aged between 60
and 64 years which is 1 in 15. (National Cancer registry 2007) Perhaps because of this fact a diagnosis can be all the more unexpected for and emotional. Breast cancer at a young age can lead to feelings of shock, isolation and anxiety.
It may help to know you are not alone and by calling the cancer information helpline on 1800 200 700 you can be put in touch with a younger volunteer like yourself who has personal experience of breast cancer.
We have also developed a special booklet for younger women which deals with particular issues which may affect a pre-menopausal woman. You can either call on the helpline number above for a free copy or download from here.
