Join the Irish Cancer Society’s Mini Marathon Team and help provide vital cancer services with every step

The Irish Cancer Society’s specialist cancer nurses on the National Cancer Helpline (Freefone 1800 200 700) responded to 30,531 interactions last year from people concerned about cancer. The Irish Cancer Society is calling on women of all ages to sign up to join their team ahead of the VHI Mini Marathon 2015 so the Society can continue its work in this area.

The event, which takes place on Monday, 1st of June 2015, will see over 40,000 women walk, jog and run the 10 kilometre route across Dublin City. Those joining Team Irish Cancer Society for the VHI Mini Marathon will be supporting the Irish Cancer Society’s services including the National Cancer Helpline.

The Society’s National Cancer Helpline is staffed by specialist cancer nurses who are on hand to offer calls or respond online to anyone concerned about cancer. They support cancer patients looking for information and support, family members of those diagnosed, members of the public concerned about cancer as well as those bereaved by cancer. The Helpline is a key component of the Society’s fight against cancer and is accredited by the Helpline Standard UK which is an internationally recognised ‘stamp of approval', ensures all calls are dealt with by adequately and appropriately trained staff, operating under strict policies and procedures which are measured and monitored by an external objective body.

With over 33,000 people diagnosed with cancer in Ireland each year, the services of the Irish Cancer Society are in demand. The Society is the National Cancer Charity providing cancer information, support and nursing care to cancer patients and their families. Aside from supporting patients at every stage of their journey, the Society is also the leading voluntary funder of cancer research in Ireland, working to find better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer.

Ahead of the big day in June, women across Ireland are being asked to consider joining team Irish Cancer Society for the day and raising funds to support the Society’s work. The Irish Cancer Society will be hosting a gathering to thank all of their team at the Stephen’s Green Food Village. Located on the first floor of the Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, St. Stephen’s Green Food Village will offer great food and a superb view of fellow team mates coming across the finish line.

Kate O’Reilly, National Campaigns Officer at the Irish Cancer Society said: “The VHI Mini Marathon is always a fantastic day out and it’s amazing to see all our runners and walkers in yellow t-shirts joining with us in the fight against cancer. We will have a fantastic day lined up for our supporters with refreshments on offer near the finish line and a party to celebrate their wonderful achievement!

The VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon is a great goal of those looking to get fit ahead of the Summer. We know that 50 per cent of cancer can be reduced by making simple lifestyle choices such as eating a healthy diet and getting regular physical activity – so why not get training for the Mini-Marathon, improve your overall health and raise funds for a good cause while doing so!”

The Society’s Get Active programme which includes Mini-Marathons, also includes other events which may be of interest to other adventure seekers including Treks, Fun Runs, Marathons and Adventure Runs.
